Recording

Since 1995, Eclipse Music Productions has produced recordings for some of the world’s best pipers and pipe bands.

With over 30 years of experience in pipe bands, Doug understands the instruments, the musicians and how to record with them effectively.  Some of Doug’s solo piping and pipe band projects include John Cairns, Bruce Gandy, Alistair Gillies, Bill Livingstone, Angus MacColl, Willie McCallum, Jim McGillivray, The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band, The Peel Regional Police Pipe Band, The City of Sacramento Pipe Band, The Niagara Police Pipe Band, The Toronto Police Pipe Band, The St. Andrew’s College Pipe Band and The Paris Port Dover Pipe Band.

Solo pipers and bands often use Doug’s arranging services to compliment their recording. Some examples of Doug’s traditional and contemporary recordings are included below.

Recording packages vary depending on the length of the recording and time needed to complete the mixing and mastering stage. Doug encourages the use of mobile recording using practice halls, concert halls or church-style spaces for his solo piper and pipe band recordings.  He’s found that those environments typically ease most players nerves and frustrations and produce better overall recordings.  Prices for some popular recording packages are:

Single:  $500 to $1000 (bands and solo players)  Suitable for I-tunes or similar digital single release or promotional purposes (website, press release, etc.).  Includes 1 day of recording with mixing and mastering after that to final digital product.

EP Disc:  $2500 to $5000 (bands) or $1000 to $2500 (solo players).  EPs are popular these days as the demise of full length recordings continue.  It’s a great way to promote yourself and create sales during parades and concerts without having to prepare 12 or more tracks for a full length CD.  A typical EP is about 4 or 5 tracks and can be sold for around $10 or used to promote your band via your website or press package.  Recording can usually be done in one full weekend (Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday).  Mixing and mastering after that to final digital product is also included.

LP Disc:  $5000 to $10000 (bands) or $2500 to $5000 (solo players).  LPs are your typical full-length CD.  Most contain 10 or more tracks and average around 50 minutes of material.  Definitely for the more adventurous, recording can take one or two weekends or more depending on your budget.  Mixing and mastering to final digital product is included.

More often than not these days, musicians are skipping the step of CD duplication.  Digital download for sale online through I-tunes, cdbaby or your own website is the most popular method and has the added benefit of having no costs associated with the manufacturing of a physical CD.  Small Run duplication of CDs can still be made for a nominal fee if physical copies are needed at some point.
